adventure in washington part 2

This past weekend was wonderful! Finals are coming up fast, but Jake decided to spend some time with us anyways (lucky us!). Our fabulously sunny friday was full of the beach, jake playing basketball while ashlyn slept and I worked, then back to the beach, and, at the end of the day, heading up to Monroe for more pie and game playing.

Saturday, while still a lot of fun, was a bit more laid back - which is probably due to the fact that it was cloudy once again (frowny face). But we did get out of the house for a duck feeding adventure. About ten minutes from our house is a little shopping village (comparable to Gardner Village in UT). And in the shopping center they have a little pond with at least four dozen ducks - and I am guessing, for the most part, they are canadian.

So we grabbed our half eaten, 100% whole wheat, homemade bread and headed over to the pond to see if ducks prefer good bread to mediocre bread.

well it just so happens that 100% whole wheat, homemade bread are canadian duck's FAVORITE! they ate the whole half loaf and were wanting more when we had to leave. Little miss schmutz is starting to love just about every animal she comes in contact with - and ducks are no exception. We will definately be visiting these ducks again.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We missed our Utah families, but are so grateful for our family in Monroe (and all of their friends)! We had a wonderful day full of lots of cooking, lots of eating, and lots of game playing... it was great!

and... as far as pictures go.. you can always tell I am having a great time when I forget to take any pictures. So enjoy the lonely picture of little miss schmutz playing cards on Thanksgiving day morning.

We hope you all had a wonderful weekend as well! and were really sad that we had to miss our annual Holy War get-to-gether... it would've been an awesome game to watch :D

Saturday

hideaway.

Little Miss Schmutz has made the famous discovery - she has found the heater and where the most covenient spot is to capture that warmth. The, so said warmth, is place right in front of my desk - which makes under my desk a little warm ball of air. And by little, I mean so little that only Ashlyn is comfortable able to fit.

And comfortably fit she does! It has become her new favorite place to take her toys or read herself a book. I always have to keep the chairs away, otherwise she climbs up and gets into my computer, etc. So now she almost always has the little nook all to herself - and I think she likes it that way.

Wednesday

whats for dinner?

...tomatoes please...

...I just want a few more. promise...

sorry for the picture overload... its for the grandparents.I.promise. But it is nice to journal just a few memories of my little daughter's strange eating habits-

She will always eat fruits and vegetables. Dairy we try to do well with... she loves yogurt and likes cheese and chocolate milk (but come on, look at her parents...). Grains are our next best bet, and she'll go along with a sandwich about once in a blue moon. Protein (other than beans) is practical nonexistent in her diet... and she is just getting to be more picky with age.

but the strangest thing is that she will not eat cookies or chocolate chips. She is becoming very picky about her sweets and I think she has a leaning towards the fruity candy (like mother like daughter)... so I can just stay awake at night thinking about the girls-nights-to-be when we will be relaxing, watching a chick flick, around a bowl of skittles. happy day.

Saturday

just our little family.

so, most weekends are pretty boring and laid back. We always save the easiest-to-cook meal for friday night along with our netflix dvd of the week. We never do the dishes that night and almost always have ice cream while we cuddle up in the love sac for our movie. All is good, except for the fact that I am stuck at home far too much. So, even though there was nothing wrong with the way we spent our friday nights, I am resolved to change it. And, now thanks to the suggestions of a new friend, we have found numerous ways to spend our weekend evenings together, out on the town, with only a little to no money.

last night we headed down to kids quest for the free friday evenings. It was a lot of fun, even though it was very crowded (can't complain, it was free). Ashlyn started off a little worried about the rambunctious crowd of kids, but she quickly warmed up once we found the exhibits that she was interested in.

Little miss schmutz really enjoyed the small river they had with logs, boats and balls; all of which you could throw in the water and watch as they floated down stream or got stuck on a log or rock. I really thought that kids quest did a good job with making learning experiences fun. I just wish Ashlyn was old enough to learn from the exhibits.

Little miss schmutz's other attention grabber was a giant lite-brite... (even though i am not sure who wanted to play with it more, little miss or me...) But the funniest thing was that every time Ashlyn would put a stick into a hole (with my help) I guess I would end up saying "nice", as a way of congratulating her. Well my little miss schmutz picked up on this idea and after a few minutes she started mimicing me every time Jake, Ashlyn or I would put a stick into the lite-brite - except she would end up saying... "Niiiii" as loud as she could. So cute!
She has really started to try talking. She loves to mimic what I say - usually just picking up the most distinct syllable and repeating it back. But I am confident she'll get the hang of it... she's already realized saying certain words will get her things she wants - she has learned saying "tree" will get her one of her halloween "treats".
anyways, we had a lot of fun on our friday evening out, and are expecting to go out and do some more fun exploring in the near future.

Thursday

Mr. Owl...

...how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?

- well lets find out...

...a one...

...a twoooh...

...a three... *crunch*... a three...

how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?
the world may never know.

(my all time favorite comercial when i was a kid... it always inspired me to count the licks everytime i had a tootsie roll pop... saddly, i never reached the tootsie roll center without biting. maybe next time...)

Saturday

what we've learned...

since moving from our lovely home in Utah -
1. rain can consistently fall for days on end and your house will (hopefully) not flood.
2. the price on organic food is really based on supply and demand, and is not an outrageous price when it is in high demand.
3. bath towels can stay wet forever, even when put through the dryer multiple times.
4. humans can live without seeing the sun for weeks at a time.
5. you must have lamps and windows when living in Washington.
6. I believe vampires do live here based on the fact that our daylight has decreased to a few hours a day.
7. netflix is a good investment.
8. thrift stores and garage sales are not only for the needy and poor.
9. driving is difficult for the absent-minded driver when there are two main freeways both going north-south.
10. it is worth all the time-money-effort needed to achieve your dreams. Even though it is a lot of hard work, at least you are able to enjoy yourself during the journey.

(These pics are from earlier this week when little miss schmutz decided to make a new snack-time-area with my kitchen stool. She figured out how to sit in it all by herself and is now regularly sitting there while I make dinner. This is very useful since she is always grumpy and complaining for dinner while I am cooking, so she now usually gets a before-dinner-snack)
